EXIF tool FAQ
Answers about local photo processing, free editing, metadata removal scope, quality, format support and paid downloads.
UpdatedAre photos uploaded to a server?
No. Parsing, editing and image generation run locally in your browser. Photos and edit drafts are stored in local IndexedDB to survive sign-in and payment returns. Use “Clear local workspace” to remove them. Account and payment APIs do not receive photos, filenames, EXIF or GPS.
What is free, and when do I pay?
Viewing, searching, EXIF edits, batch editing and privacy checks are free without sign-in. Sign-in and a download plan are required only for photo copies, cleaned images, photo cards and image ZIPs. Metadata JSON exports remain free.
Which photo formats are supported?
JPEG supports lossless EXIF editing. Decodable formats such as PNG and WebP support viewing and cleanup by conversion to PNG. HEIC, TIFF and AVIF support depends on file contents and the browser. The per-file limit is 80 MB; batch size depends on device memory.
How does EXIF-only removal differ from all-metadata removal?
EXIF-only removal strips the standard JPEG EXIF block; XMP and IPTC may remain. All-metadata removal strips JPEG EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comments while retaining compressed image data and APP0/APP2, including ICC. This is the tool’s defined cleanup scope, not a forensic anonymity guarantee.
Does deleting GPS remove every location clue?
Not necessarily. GPS-only removal clears EXIF GPS fields. XMP, IPTC, filenames or visible image content may still reveal a location. Review all metadata, filenames and image content before sharing sensitive photos.
Does editing or cleanup reduce image quality?
JPEG EXIF edits and JPEG metadata-block cleanup do not recompress image data. Canvas conversion of other formats to PNG may change file size, color, HDR or decoding results. Keep originals and inspect exported copies.
Will sign-in or payment erase my edits?
Normally, no. Before redirecting, the local workspace saves photos, selection, edits, zoom and form drafts. It restores in the same browser on the same origin. Private mode, clearing storage, changing devices or insufficient storage can prevent restoration.
Can author and copyright fields use non-ASCII text?
The current writer uses EXIF ASCII for camera, author and copyright fields, supporting English, numbers and ASCII punctuation. The UI is bilingual and original metadata is displayed as stored. UI language support does not imply Unicode support for every EXIF field.
When should I remove EXIF data?
Before posting photos from home, school or a marketplace listing, review GPS, capture dates and author details. Choose GPS-only, EXIF-only or all-metadata removal, keep the original, and reimport the cleaned copy to check it.
Why edit EXIF data instead of removing it?
Edit EXIF data to correct a camera clock error or add author and copyright credits for an archive or delivery. Remove sensitive fields from a public sharing copy when needed. Choose the action that fits your use.
Can an EXIF data viewer recover deleted metadata?
No. An EXIF data viewer reads metadata that is still present and readable in the file. Screenshots or platform-processed images may lack EXIF. Recovering removed details requires an original file or another record.
